Students

European Identity Seminar

The Strasbourg, France program begins with a pre-semester field study seminar for students in all options (except Music Performance). This 2-credit course serves as an introduction to some of the most pressing issues facing today’s Europe. During the seminar, you will visit major cities and important historical sites where you’ll have the opportunity to meet with local politicians, academics and activists. You will get to see firsthand how history, geography and politics are woven together to create multi-layered European identities.

In the European Identity course, you’ll explore the impact of culture, history, and politics on the consciousness of European peoples. It introduces you to the forces that have led Europeans to define themselves in a number of ways such as French (or German, etc.), Alsatian (or Saxon, etc.), Catholic or Protestant or Jew, workers or capitalists. The multilayered nature of cultural and political identity in Europe is the key to understanding contemporary political and social action in the expanding “New Europe.” More details here:

The fall seminar, which begins in Berlin, takes the group to Wroclaw (Poland), Prague (Czech Republic), and Nuremberg.

The spring seminar begins in Paris, and travels to Belgium, Holland and Germany.
