Graduate Internships
During the fall semester (mid-July to mid-December) graduate students and advanced undergraduates have the option to enroll in an intensive, professional development internship in Santiago. Challenging internships and researchships include NGOs, governmental agencies, and private sector offices involved in international trade, commerce, and banking. Former students have interned at the American Chamber of Commerce, the UN Economic Commission for South America and the Caribbean, the U.S. Embassy, the Ford Foundation, and FLACSO. Education students have also worked in Chilean schools. Students must be proficient in Spanish and commit to working at least 25-30 hours per week.
Graduate students earn 9-11 credits at the graduate level: the professional internship (3 credits), the Contemporary Issues seminar (3-4 credits), and a 3- or 4-credit graduate-level seminar offered by U Chile’s Institute for Public Policy or the Institute for International Studies. Undergraduate students enroll for a 6-credit internship (a minimum of 270 internship hours), the Contemporary Issues course, and an additional program course to earn a minimum of 12 credits for the semester.
Interested students can complete the Internship Request Form of the on-line application and submit a resume showing relevant coursework and prior work experience in the requested internship field.
Service Learning and Field Experience
Undergraduate students have an opportunity for community engagement in NGOs, local schools, or community-based organizations. These projects are components of the Contemporary Issues course.
