Art History, Architecture and the Visual Arts

Ars es Fides
Ars es Fides is a volunteer organization which has been offering free guided tours of major Florentine churches for almost 10 years. The group’s aim is to provide tourists with some religious and conceptual background on Florence’s churches, in addition to basic artistic notions. Tours are offered every day of the week (except Sunday mornings) from 10:30 to 12:00 and from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the churches of Santa Maria del Fiore (Duomo), Santa Croce, Santa Maria Novella and San Lorenzo. No knowledge of Italian or about the church’s history is necessary. Tours will be given to English-speaking tourists the managing office will provide all the information that the intern needs to conduct the tours. Students must simply guarantee availability of at least one morning or afternoon a week. The office will provide the information about the churches as well as a personalized ID card. No previous knowledge of Italian is necessary.
Digital imaging - SUF Media Lab
Students work primarily out of the Syracuse University in Florence Media Lab, but are required to also do extensive research in Florentine archives and libraries. The focus of the internship is the digitalization of archival materials related to the history of art and architecture disciplines. No prior knowledge of Italian is required.
Istituto Nazionale di Studi sul Rinascimento
The Istituto Nazionale di Studi sul Rinascimento is a research institute for Renaissance studies and a member of the IRIS Consortium, a network of Florentine libraries which specialize in Renaissance history. Interns are generally involved in updating the extensive archives of the Consortium and the catalogues that it produces.
Museo Archeologico
The Archeological Museum of Florence hosts one of the most important collections of Etruscan Art in Europe. Students are directly involved in working with the museum's collection and when possible are invited to take part in trips to archeological sites outside of Florence. This internship is especially recommended for students in Classical Studies or Art History. Beginner’s to intermediate Italian is recommended.
Museo dell'Opera del Duomo
The Museo dell'Opera del Duomo brings together an extensive and extremely valuable collection of art originally produced for and located in the cathedral, baptistery and bell tower of Florence. This internship involves the preparation of information in English about the museum's collection and/or providing guided tours of the museum itself to English-speaking tourists. No prior knowledge of Italian is necessary.
Photography - SUF Photo Lab
Intermediate and advanced students of photography document special events and activities which take place at SUF during the semester: lectures, field trips, exhibits, cooking lessons, drama workshop performances, etc. All photos used for SUF publications will be printed with the intern's full name. In order to do this internship, the student must: 1)own his/her own camera (preferably digital) with flash capabilities, 2) be skilled in taking pictures using flash and under natural lighting, and 3) have the time available outside of the regular class day to photograph special events and activities No knowledge of Italian is necessary. Intermediate to advanced photographic experience is required.
Slow Food Toscana
Slow Food Toscana is the Tuscan branch of a nation-wide organization whose mission it is to preserve and divulge the Italian culture of food and gastronomic traditions. Slow Food aims to promote traditional ways of producing Italian foods and frequently organizes courses for the local English-speaking community on a variety of topics, such as the production and appreciation of Italian wine and olive oil. This internship is particularly recommended for students interested in Italian and Tuscan gastronomic culture. It is also well suited to students interested in developing marketing techniques aimed at better acquainting the local English-speaking community with the organization’s activities. No previous knowledge of Italian is necessary.
Studio 101
Studio 101 is a small business that designs and manufactures fashion handbags for the international market. Student interns are involved in the creative process of production and thus the internship is suited for students with a particular interest in fashion design. No knowledge of Italian is necessary.
Studio Architettonico di Andrea Ponsi
Architect of public buildings, commercial interiors and urban townscapes; designer of interior furnishings, office spaces and exhibits; finalist and winner of numerous international competitions. The student intern assists with model building and project design presentations. Experience using CAD is very useful. No Italian necessary.
Studio Fotografico Petronio
Photographer Gianni Petronio specializes in photographing Still Life and Food. The intern works as an assistant to Sig. Petronio and is given the opportunity to experiment with studio photography techniques and artificial lighting, use a large format camera, prepare a set for shooting, make contacts in the professional and commercial world of photography and follow the photographic process from the moment a work is commissioned until it is delivered to the client. The student need not have his/her own photographic equipment and no photographic experience is necessary, although a serious interest in photography is. No prior knowledge of Italian is necessary.
Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino - Production Management
The Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino (formerly known as the Teatro Comunale) is the city of Florence’s prestigious opera house. The intern would work under the Production Manager (Direttore Artistico) assisting with the general management of current productions as well as with the organization of upcoming or future events. He/she would also do research on new ways to "market" opera to diverse, non-traditional audiences. This internship is suited for students in management or theater studies. Intermediate to advanced Italian required.
Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino - Scenery Production
The student would assist the Direttore degli Allestimenti with the design and production of stage scenery and costumes. This internship is suited for students majoring in the visual arts. Intermediate to advanced Italian required.
Villa I Tatti
The Harvard Center for Renaissance Studies is located in the beautiful Villa I Tatti, former residence of Bernard Berenson. One of the most important Renaissance art history libraries in the world, I Tatti also contains Berenson's private art collection still housed in the villa. Interns work in the slide library assisting the librarian with organizing and updating the collection and are thus exposed to one of the city's most important centers of international culture. Italian not required.

Business, Marketing and Graphic Design

A Tuscan Wedding
This small private firm, started by a former SUF graduate student in the 1980s, has successfully been providing state of the art wedding arrangements (locations for service and reception, catering, music, flowers, etc.) to American couples who wish to marry in Tuscany for over 20 years. An internship with ATW allows students to acquire experience with a small local enterprise which specializes in marketing the cultural and natural resources of Tuscany. No previous knowledge of Italian is required.
ASSINDUSTRIA FIRENZE (Associazione degli Industriali di Firenze)
ASSINDUSTRIA is an association of approx. 1,700 companies of different types and sizes operating throughout the region of Tuscany. Internship possibilities in the areas of economics, management and marketing will be worked out with the help of the vice-president of the Association, N. Donzelli, in order to suit the attitudes and needs of each individual student. Only internships for a minimum of 2 credits (90 contact hours of work during the semester) are possible. Basic Italian is helpful but not essential.
BZF - Vallecchi
In the 1900s Italian artistic, literary and intellectual life revolved around the caffè. It was there that writers, painters, musicians, actors and journalists spent hours talking, writing, drawing. Today, the well known publishing house and bookstore chain, Vallecchi, has recreated this spirit with BZF--a caffe in the heart of Florence where people of all ages can meet, talk, listen to music, exchange ideas and express their artistic talents. An internship with BZF may involve marketing activities and/or organizing cultural events to better acquaint the local community--Italian-speaking and English-speaking alike--with this interesting alternative to the contemporary discotheque or pub. Beginner’s to intermediate Italian is recommended.
Citylife
Citylife S.p.A. is an Internet association created by the Cassa Di Risparmio di Firenze and other local companies to provide residents of Florence with information about the city and its surroundings. Among its information-based activities, Citylife manages Firenze.net, a leading web portal which provides on-line shopping services, reservation/ticketing possibilities, and nationwide news reports. Firenze.net is also a conscientious promoter of the image of Florence. It supports cultural initiatives and provides an international window onto the artistic patronage of Florence and Tuscany. The English version of the web site offers information tailored to the needs of the Anglo-American community in Florence, particularly students and tourists. Business-related internships may include surveys aimed at understanding the habits and preferences of Northern Americans when they travel and study abroad and how they gather information before leaving.
Flying Fish Advertising & Creative Services
Flyingfish Advertising & Creative Services is a Florentine-based advertising agency founded by Enrica Ficai-Veltroni and Michele Fanfani who have combined extensive years of experience working for some of the most prestigious advertising agencies in Milan (Thompson, Satchi & Satchi, Young & Rubicam). Flyingfish Advertising focuses on developing imaginative marketing strategies for its business clientele through the use of high impact graphic design and visual techniques. Interns are expected to contribute their own ideas and artistic skills to the conceptual and executive processes of these marketing strategies. No previous knowledge of Italian is necessary.

Education

Elementary School
Students doing an internship with in an Italian elementary school are assigned to work with one (or more) teacher(s) and a class of 20-25 children to assist in the teaching of English as a foreign language. In some cases, the intern is asked to create and carry out her/his own classroom activities, in other cases she/he is asked to follow the program developed by the primary teacher. Whenever possible, interns are encouraged to share some traditional American folklore (games and songs) with the class. Activities related to American holidays (Halloween, Christmas, Easter, Independence Day, etc.) are welcome forms of intercultural exchange. An internship in an Italian elementary school not only allows the American student to gain firsthand teaching experience, but also gives her/him the opportunity to compare and contrast teaching methods and techniques used. In addition to English language instruction, other teaching opportunities may include sports, art, or drama. A basic knowledge of Italian is helpful, though not necessary. High School
Students doing an internship with an Italian high school work with one or more classes of 25-30 high school students to offer conversation and other instruction in English. An internship in an Italian high school allows the American student to gain firsthand experience teaching at the high school level; learn about the interests of youth in Italy; compare and contrast youth trends in Italy and the U.S.; and observe how schools operate in Italy. No previous knowledge of Italian is necessary. Participating high schools include:

Literature, Communications and Creative Writing

"Seeten" TV Magazine
"Seeten" is an English-language TV magazine hosted but not owned by the Tuscan television station "Teletoscana". It provides information about Florence and major artistic and cultural events in Florence in addition to all kinds of useful information for travelers. Interns take part in every aspect of program production, including reporting live on TV. The program is also interested in developing a "student’s view" segment in which the opinions of American students in Florence are heard. Students interested in this internship must be able to dedicate a minimum of 90 contact hours of work for the semester (two academic credits). Basic Italian is helpful but not required.
Casalini Libri
Casalini Libri is a leading firm in the import and export of books in all languages. Their offices are located in a lovely villa on the beautiful hill of Fiesole. Interns are involved in cataloguing new arrivals, preparing tables of contents, and processing books for libraries of various kinds. This is a good opportunity for students to see how a typical small-to-medium-size Italian company operates.
Citylife
Students of journalism undertaking an internship with Citylife write short informative articles (in English) on local cultural events and recreational opportunities considered to be of interest to American students in Florence.
Dipartimento d’Italianistica - Università degli Studi di Firenze
Especially suited for Italian studies majors, this internship allows SUF students to work alongside Italian university students and faculty within one of the most prestigious departments of the University of Florence--the Department of Italian Literature. Students develop literary projects, collaborate with Italian students in carrying out day-to-day library activities, help in the organization of conferences and lectures (often meeting internationally acclaimed writers and critics) and practice their Italian language skills on a regular basis. Intermediate to advanced Italian is necessary.
Gabinetto Vieusseux
One of the most ancient and reknown cultural institutions in town. Located in the beautiful Renaissance palazzo Strozzi , The Gabinetto Vieusseux hosts a famous collection of books. Plans are made to have students working on the 19th century transcription of the patrons’ list, thus being exposed to one of the most interesting aspects of Florence’s cultural history.
Gola Gioconda (Magazine of the Slow Food Association)
Gola Giocanda is a monthly magazine dedicated to spreading an understanding and appreciation of Italian gastronomic culture. The magazine is published by the Slow Food organization (see relative description in the “Business” section) through the Aide Publishing Media Firm.. Students assist with the English version of the magazine by translating articles from Italian into English and reporting on and writing about special events promoted by the Slow Food organization. Intermediate to advanced Italian required.
Mega Review
Mega Review is an Italian communications firm that produces a monthly publication in Italian and English called Vivifirenze. An internship with Mega Review involves both copyediting work and writing articles (which the student signs). Vivifirenze is promoted by the Agenzia Promozionale di Turismo (APT) for the province of Florence and is widely circulated throughout the province. The publication provides its readers with basic information about Florence and surrounding towns with regard to things to see, where to stay, places to eat, etc. This internship is well suited to students of journalism and communications. Basic Italian is helpful but not required.

Political and Social Sciences

"Democratici di Sinistra" - Political Party
Democratici di Sinistra (Democrats of the Left) is the largest political party of the center-left in Italy. An internship with its regional office gives students the opportunity to observe how Italian political parties are structured and operate at a local level. Interns participate in meetings, attend regional councils and interact with Italian interns who are also working for the party. Student interns are assigned a specific research project which makes the experience extremely valuable in terms of original, comparative research. Past studies have included Italian vs. U.S. forms of federalism, and U.S. vs. Italian governmental bureaucratic reforms. Intermediate to advanced Italian is necessary.
Associazione Artemisia: Centro Donne Contro la Violenza
Associazione Artemisia is a non-profit organization aimed at preventing violence of all kinds against women. It provides shelter as well as legal and psychological counseling to women who have been subject to sexual or physical abuse of varying degrees or kinds. The association works in close cooperation with the Comune di Firenze. Interns may be involved in carrying out surveys or producing literature aimed at preventing acts of abuse against young women. No prior knowledge of Italian is necessary.
Centro Giovani Java
The Centro Giovani Java is a non-profit organization sponsored by the Comune di Firenze and run by a local team of social workers. Located in downtown Florence (Santa Croce neighborhood), its mission is to provide an open space for young people to gather. In particular, the Centro organizes a variety of courses and activities aimed at providing young people with meaningful ways to spend their free time in hopes of preventing the spread of social problems such as petty crime and drug addiction. Basic Italian is useful.
Dipartimento di Scienze Politiche (DISPO)
DISPO, or the Department of Political Science at the University of Florence, is one of the best known and most highly respected departments of Political Science in the country. Student interns work closely with department faculty and staff assisting in the preparation of publications in English and in the organization of various seminars and academic events. Intermediate to advanced Italian is necessary.
Europe Infopoint
Europe Infopoint is an agency of the Comune di Firenze which provides local citizens with useful information about the European Union. The agency is located in the Palazzo Vecchio, seat of the city council of Florence, which adds an interesting flavor to the internship. Interns will research web sites and various European publications to update the information that the agency gives local citizens. Interns may also participate in the organization of special events (lectures, seminars) aimed at increasing public awareness of European issues in Florence. This internship begins in spring 2005.
Forum for the Problems of Peace and War
Forum is a non-governmental organization bringing together scholars of all disciplines interested in research on issues concerning peace and war. Forum organizes numerous seminars, conferences and other scholarly events. Interns are involved in the organization of events and/or assist in the preparation of materials for research projects. This internship is well suited to students of political science and international relations. Intermediate to advanced Italian is necessary.
Lega Italiana per la Lotta all’AIDS
LILA is a non-profit organization which aims to heighten people’s awareness of their social behaviour as it relates to the prevention of AIDS. Interns carry out research projects on the problem of AIDS in Italy and Europe and compile literature in English to better inform young Anglo-Americans living and studying in Italy as to how they can prevent contracting or spreading the disease. Beginner’s to intermediate Italian is necessary.
Toscana Europa
Toscana Europa is a non-profit organization sponsored by the European Parliament to better familiarize residents of Tuscany with the political issues that affect them on the European level. Interns generally work on the English language version of the organization’s web site translating information for the site from Italian into English. This internship is well suited to students of Political Science and International Relations. Intermediate to advanced Italian is necessary.
