Italian Visa Instructions
Visa application materials must be mailed to SU Abroad by November 1, 2009
All students (except those with EU citizenship) need to obtain an Italian student visa in order to study abroad in Florence. Syracuse University Abroad will collect and review your visa application and submit it to the Italian consulate on your behalf as part of a group submission. There are 10 Italian Consulates in the United States, and your application will be submitted to the Consulate whose jurisdiction you fall under (determined by home address). Each Consulate has very specific, and often differing requirements, so when preparing your materials to send to us, it is imperative that you pay close attention to the instructions provided.
IMPORTANT
Your student visa will become a permanent part of your U.S. Passport, and as such, you must submit your passport as part of your application. The visa application process takes several weeks. Because you will not have access to your passport until your visa is issued by the Italian Consulate, you should not make any travel plans that will require your passport until it has been returned to you. If you have already made travel plans that require your passport, you must notify Nicole Cicoria at SU Abroad immediately to discuss your options.
Please take special note of the following:
- Many of the documents you have to provide for your visa application have to be NOTARIZED , as stipulated in the instructions we provide. Please make sure to have such documents officially notarized before sending them to SU Abroad, or they will be returned to you.
- Requested documents must be originals- NO photocopies or faxes (unless specifically stated).
- Sample Schengen Visa Applications are provided in the list of instructions; please refer to the sample when filling out your own application.
- Due to the high volume of inquiries regarding visa applications, we ask that you please reference our Frequently Asked Questions page before contacting SU Abroad with questions. SU Abroad will be happy to answer your questions if you cannot find the information you need on the FAQ page, found here: http://suabroad.syr.edu/programs/location/florence/preparingToGo/visaInformation/newPage/
- You do not have a passport, or your passport expires within 6 months of the program end date
- you already have made travel plans that will require your passport
- you are an international student or EU Citizen
