Grants & Aid
SU Abroad is committed to making study abroad a reality for students from a variety of backgrounds. We offer a number of need- and merit-based grants and scholarships, as well as special incentives, for students participating in SU Abroad programs.
FOR ALL UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS:
All students continue receiving their existing federal financial aid. SU students continue to receive any grants and scholarships awarded by SU. Non-SU students, in some cases, may not be eligible for SU Abroad grants/aid or allowed to apply their federal financial aid to another institution for study abroad. Students are strongly encouraged to consult with their home college/university.
International students may qualify for merit-based scholarships, consecutive term grants, Named Scholarship awards and in some cases for non-SU students, tuition differential grants.
Graduate students seeking financial aid assistance should consult with their home college or institution.
- Merit-Based Scholarships
Provides up to $1,200 for all students with a GPA of 3.7 or above and is awarded by SU Abroad. The awards are automatic so no application is needed. Award schedule:
GPA - AMOUNT
- 3.7-3.79: $400
- 3.8-3.89: $800
- 3.9-4.00: $1200
- Need-Based Study Abroad Grants (SAGs) (undergraduate U.S. citizens/permanent residents only)
Grants are awarded for SU Abroad programs and based on the most current FAFSA filing; no application is needed. Non-SU students must provide access to their FAFSA filing to SU Abroad for need review. To do so, log into your FAFSA account online and add Syracuse University (002882).
- Location Grants (undergraduate U.S. citizens/permanent residents only)
Beijing or Santiago center-based programs only.
The award, available for both the fall and spring semesters, is based on need. Recipients of the location grant will not receive an additional SAG award.
- Consecutive Term Grants (Stay & Save)
Students may be eligible for Stay & Save grants when extending their SU Abroad experience. This includes the extension of a spring-semester program into a summer program; a summer program into a fall semester program; or a fall-semester program into a full-year program. FOR SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY STUDENTS ONLY:
SU undergraduate students continue receiving their existing federal financial aid and any grants or scholarships awarded by SU. The following opportunities are also available:
- Fall-Only Semester Promotions
- Up to 10% above existing SU aid.
- Spring housing discount: SU students who enroll in a fall semester SU Abroad program will receive a $1,000 discount on their on-campus housing bill for the following spring semester. Credit is awarded on your bursar’s account in the spring semester
- Named Scholarships

FOR NON-SU STUDENTS ONLY:
Non-SU undergraduate students who participate in SU Abroad programs should verify with their home school the continuation of existing financial aid. SU’s bursar requires written confirmation of funds that will be sent on behalf of visiting students; a financial aid transfer form (Consortium Agreement) must be completed by the student’s home school.
Tuition Differential Grants
These grants are awarded to students at colleges and universities that have an existing affiliation agreement with SU Abroad. (click here for the current list of affiliated schools). Students enrolled in affiliated schools should consult with their study abroad office for more details.

A $500 discount is offered to students who stay abroad for a summer program after the spring semester or for the fall semester after a summer program.
